Ed Clancy and Georgina Norton (assist' time keeper)

Ed Clancy, a reigning Olympic Champion, and Andy Tennant rode in the club 10 mile TT at Gawsworth last night along with 22 others. Both are GB squad riders who were team members of the recent World Championship Team Pursuit winning team in Australia. Incredibly both riders did 19:47, which we believe equals the course record for the JC/5 course. Fastest Congleton rider was Pete Smith who, in his first time trial, was third with 23:26.

17/04/2012 – Congleton ’10’ Circuit – JC/26

Nineteen riders and plenty of helpers turned out for our first race on the Congleton-Holmes Chapel-Brereton-Congleton circuit this year. On what is usually regarded as a ‘slow’ course, professional rider Andy Tennant (Rapha-Condor-Sharp) was a clear winner in a stunning time of 21:28 (which is almost certainly a course record). Pete Tatton was fastest Club member in a time of 25:29.

Club Run from Abergele

On April 1st the Sunday club run started from Abergele in North Wales. The weather was bright and clear giving some magnificent views over Snowdonia from above the Conwy valley, and the coastal scenery around the Great Orme was stunning. There were only 4 takers for the ride. Bob and  Georgina Norton , Stephen Kane and David McVittie. We started from Pensarn Promenade, and headed south to Llanfair Talhaiam. Then west towards Llanwrst through Llangrwnwy, before turning left onto the B5513 to Nebo. There ae some great views looking west from this road. We then dropped down to the A5 and Betwys for a lunch stop. We then took the old road through Trefwy and Dolgarrog to Conwy and on to Llandudno via Deganwy. We had an afternoon coffee stop cafe on the road around the Great Orme (Marine Drive), before carrying on round the Orme and back to Llandudno. The route back the Abergele was to rhos on Sea and the on to the Sustrans North Wales Coast path. A good day out, 64 miles with about 4000 feet of climb..

West African Slide Show

An audience of 15, were entertained on March 29th by a slide show of photographs taken during Rob and Avril Waghorns West African adventure with Bike Dreams. Rob was a rider on the 3500 mile, 10 week epic from Dakar in Senegal to Accra in Ghana, passing through The Gambia, Mali, Burkino Fasso, Benin, Togo and Ghana. Avril was a masseuse on the support crew. The trip gave them to see the real West Africa, travelling as they did in extremes of heat and dust, staying in a mix of bush camps and local accommodation. Rob descibed the environment in which the population lived and gave a real sense of what life must be like for them. Appreciation for the slide show was given in the time honoured way, i.e. applause. Rob kept a blog during their trip, which gives detail of their day to day experiences. Read more

Karl’s Case. Driver sent to Crown Court for sentencing

After a distressing afternoon in the Derby Magistrates Court on March 6th, the presiding District Judge ruled that he had insufficient powers of sentence and committed the case for sentencing to Derby Crown Court on April 12th at 09:30. It was a dramatic day after which at last it looks like the justice system will deliver. Keith (Karl’s dad) played no small part in achieving this, by meetings with the CPS and media interviews. On the day both he and Linda were interviewed by BBC TV news. Midlands Today and East Midlands Today ran the story at the top of their evening news broadcasts. Journalists from the BBC, The Sentinel and The Chronicle were in court.

Karl in MP’s Cycling Safety Debate

Fiona Bruce, MP for Congleton, spoke about the death of Karl Austin in the marathon Westminster debate on safer cycling yesterday. She highlighted the belief that the lorry driver who killed him may not receive a sufficient sentence after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.

CAUTION – 100-mile Reliabilty

Roadworks this week may still be there this Sunday.

At LH turn, off A51, towards Maer at 21.28 miles -“Road Closed” – but OK to continue. After Maer village, on RH bend at 22 miles, road is clear for “Pedestrians Only”. This is only a 25 yd stretch – so no problem.

Then, on the descent of Rock Lane to Slindon, on the LH bend at 24.0 miles, there are 2 large potholes (marked with white paint).

Take care and enjoy!
